No response received: The canal is an important piece of Richmond history.  Please tell me in your own words, as Mayor of Richmond and President of Venture Richmond, why it is necessary to disturb the canal.

Honorable Dwight C. Jones, Mayor
City of Richmond
900 E. Broad St., Suite 201
Richmond, VA 23219

Re: Venture Richmond – Canal Modifications

Dear Honorable Mayor,

You are listed as the President of Venture Richmond Corporation, which is the promoter for the annual Richmond Folk Festival.

Venture Richmond owns the land along the west side of Brown’s Island Way and wants to use the land for the Folk Festival main stage.  The James River and Kanawha Company canal bisects the property.

Venture Richmond also wants to lease an adjacent parcel of land owned by the city and use it as part of the main stage venue. The canal also bisects the city’s property. Mr. Byron Marshall, the city’s Chief Administrative Office, has applied to the Planning Commission for approval of a main stage concept plan for the city property.

The plans for the main stage venue include significant modifications to the existing canal. The location of the canal berm would be shifted. The top of the berm would be removed. The edges of the earthworks would be cut back. The bottom of the canal would be reshaped.

Mr. Jack Berry, the Executive Director of Venture Richmond, clams that Venture Richmond will terminate the Folk Festival if the canal has to be preserved as it exists.  The basis for that claim is not clear.

The canal is an important piece of Richmond history.  Please tell me in your own words, as Mayor of Richmond and President of Venture Richmond, why it is necessary to disturb the canal.

Sincerely yours,

C. Wayne Taylor
